In the heart of Abuja, Nigeria, Wakil Usman stands out not only as an accomplished accountant but also as a passionate advocate for circular economy and sustainability. His journey is a remarkable tale of how one individual’s commitment to greener practices can influence an entire community.
Wakil experienced a significant transformation through the Green Ambassadorship Program (GAP). This shift was not only about adopting sustainable practices but also about becoming more efficient in managing his time, prioritizing tasks, and establishing meaningful connections. “GAP equipped me with the necessary training and real-life scenarios to participate in discussions relating to climate change and sustainability policies in my organization,” Wakil shared.
One of the key aspects of his transformation was learning to arrange his schedules and activities in order of their importance and allocating specific times for their completion. This newfound efficiency enabled Wakil to juggle multiple responsibilities, achieving numerous goals simultaneously.
Wakil’s passion for sustainability is reflected in his commitment to recycling and upcycling. He diligently collects used bottles, containers, and cans, passing them to local drink sellers for reuse. This practice not only reduces waste but also supports local businesses. “The concept of recycling and upcycling is well applied to my daily activities, including the people around me both at home and in the office, for a cleaner environment,” he emphasized.
Through GAP, Wakil gained in-depth knowledge about renewable energy and the circular economy. He enthusiastically shared his insights with his colleagues and community, fostering a culture of sustainability. “Renewable energy is a new concept I learned in-depth from GAP, especially the circular economy aspect of it.”
One of the most rewarding outcomes of Wakil’s involvement with GAP has been the network he built across African countries. “I developed a strong network of youth across African countries,” he said. This network has been instrumental in sharing best practices, collaborating on sustainability projects, and promoting environmental awareness on a larger scale.
Wakil’s ability to multitask and his dedication to sustainability have made him a valuable asset in his organization. He actively participates in discussions on climate change and sustainability policies, bringing fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to the table, influencing those around him, and building a legacy of environmental stewardship.
